Robbie Hummel given full clearance to play

By Jeff Goodman

Robbie Hummel is good to go.

The Purdue senior forward – who will wait nearly two years between games after suffering a pair of torn ACL’s – told CBSSports.com on Friday afternoon that he was given clearance to play contact, 5-on-5.

The only problem?

``No one is at school,” Hummel laughed. ``And I’m not going to the local YMCA.”

Hummel had actually been cleared by his surgeon months ago, but has been training and rehabbing daily at Tim Grover’s facility in Chicago.

``They wanted to minimize my tendinitis and strengthen my leg,” Hummel said.

Hummel had to do a series of tests – one that he wasn’t able to pass until today. It was one in which he’d jump down 3 or 4 feet off a pad and then immediately explode back into a 42-inch platform.

``He (Grover) wasn’t going to let me play until I passed everything,” Hummel said. ``And I respect his opinion.”

Now Hummel’s stint with Grover is over and he won’t go back to Purdue – along with his teammates – until another couple of weeks.

Hummel said he’s able to cut, run and jump without any issue – and he’s able to dunk again.

``It feels good,” he said. ``I’m starting to feel some explosiveness again.”

Again?

Couldn’t resist.

wish him the best success and to not have another injury in last year at purdue.
it will probably be weird since most of his fellow players that came in with him or played
next to him have all moved on and now he is way older then the recruits coming.
also he was use to being on a contending purdue team and with the loss of the big 2
from last season he may come all the back to a mediocre team and that would be a sad
way for him to go out at purdue.

Two knee surgeries.  If he can stay healthy this NCAA season Purdue will make some noise.  2nd in the Big 10 last year.  Remember the 18 point loss to VCU?  Robbie could help them forget that during a run next year.

I never like to hear about a player being injured, and twice in two years is awlful. Great news that he is back, and I hope he has a fanatastic season. He deserves it.

Robbie Hummel given full clearance to play

I'm a huge IU fan and always have been.  But I'm glad to hear about this news.  I wouldn't wish that type of injury on anyone...let alone twice!  I hope he plays well this year (just not against the Hoosiers).  Good luck Robbie!  I'll be pulling for ya.  IUDOC
