Vandy's loss won't help Vandy's reputation

By Gary Parrish

It's just a November loss to a non-league opponent.

And Festus Ezeli didn't play.

So, in the end, Vanderbilt's 71-58 loss to Cleveland State won't matter much in any tangible way. It won't keep the Commodores from winning the SEC or making the Final Four, and it probably won't even affect their seed because the selection committee will recognize it happened with their starting center in street clothes. But, that said, this still hurts -- at least in terms or reputation -- because no school's preseason ranking was more questioned than Vanderbilt's, and Sunday's embarrassing loss at Memorial Gym won't do much to change the perception that the Commodores just don't belong next to North Carolina and Duke and Louisville, regardless of what returns and what enrolls.

It's still Vandy, the skeptics screamed all preseason.

On Sunday, they all laughed and mocked and joked on Twitter.

Will Vanderbilt get the last laugh?

Perhaps.

I mean, I still like this team -- especially when it includes Ezeli. But the last thing a school already fighting perception issues based on postseason losses to lower-seeded teams needed to do Sunday was give skeptics more reasons to be skeptical, and that's precisely what Vanderbilt did. So now the Commodores will just have to deal with it ... and a ranking outside of the top 10, too.

Vandy's loss won't help Vandy's reputation

Look what Louisville did without a power forward for most of last season,

They lost to Morehead (Slick Rick's FAVORITE phrase) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. THAT's what Louisville did without a power forward last season.

Let's just wait and see how Louisville fares against Vanderbilt when they play them on December 2nd. THEN, you can comment about that "glass jaw" all you want.

Vandy's loss won't help Vandy's reputation

Now that we've discussed Vandy's reputation, can we now talk about Gary Parrish's reputation?

Vandy's loss won't help Vandy's reputation

Here we go with the glass jaw of the SEC.  First Mississippi State lays an egg against Akron at home, and now Vandy gets killed by Cleveland State (something about those smaller schools in Ohio, hmmmmm).  With or without Fetus Ezeli, clearly a game the 'Dores could have and should have won, but there was no rhythm for Vandy and the crowd was lifeless, even when they got behind by 15, 16 points and mounted a rally.  But special things can be done, look at what Louisville did without a power forward for most of last season, and made up with sheer hustle supplied by the other players.  That's what Vandy needs is supreme effort with Jenkins, Tinsley, and others to make up from what they lack with having Ezeli's services due to sitting out for receiving impermissible benefits and nursing a hurt knee.  Later down the line Vandy will survive, but this loss certainly does not help for seeding in March .....

Vandy's loss won't help Vandy's reputation

So true.  As a UT fan, we could very well lose twice to Vandy, but it's always nice to see Stallings and Vandy lose.  Thanks Cleveland State!

Vandy's loss won't help Vandy's reputation

Quick, speedy teams always give the Dore's trouble...not exactly sure why...but they do. Maybe it's a lack of coaching by Stallings? Seems by now, especially after their last two first round upset losses in the NCAA tourny, that Stallings would have figured it out by now...how to deal with teams that are much quicker, but lacking size. But I guess not!

Vandy's loss won't help Vandy's reputation

Well said.  Vandy can be a great team this year, but they have to stop playing games like this.
