Somehow Duke just won a game that seemed lost

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- I had a bunch of words written and ready to post 25 minutes go.

Then North Carolina stopped scoring.

And Duke kept making shots.

And then Austin Rivers, with his Blue Devils somehow down by just two after trailing by double-digits for most of the second half, pulled from 25 feet on the right wing and buried a game-winning jumper at the buzzer that will never be forgotten around these parts. So now the scoreboard reads Duke 85, North Carolina 84, and that's the final. And now this building is quiet. And people are stunned. And I don't believe I've ever seen anything quite like what I just saw here at the Dean Smith Center.

"See y'all," Rivers yelled to the North Carolina students as he jogged off the court.

"[Expletive] you!" one student yelled back.

And, yeah, this Duke-UNC rivalry is as intense as ever.

"I've never seen anything like that," said UNC coach Roy Williams. "But this is North Carolina and Duke."

The game seemed over about an hour ago.

If you watched it, you know that.

Harrison Barnes was rolling, Tyler Zeller was overshadowing both Plumlee brothers, and John Henson looked like he might get 20 rebounds. The fifth-ranked Tar Heels were up 13 on their homecourt. I didn't see any reason to wait around before I started typing. So I started typing. I typed a bunch of words. And then North Carolina stopped scoring. And Duke kept making shots. And then Rivers buried a winning jumper that will never be forgotten around these parts, and I don't believe I've ever seen anything quite like what I just saw.

life is good....Devils win..Tarheels lose..stars aligned....full moon tonight?...yes...might as well be...Blue Devis are not the team they have been in years past. No defense and no go to offensive player...until tonight...but...BUT...do you think think that Rivers is the savior for the Duke team?...the Plumless are who they are...rebounders and possibly scorers on occasion(Mason)....Curry is very streaky..can we rely on this team to go to the ACC championship and further....all I know is that tonight is awesome...go DEVILS!

"stat calls"

um. yeah, ok.  that is why it was 16-9 fouls, cryolina to the advantage at one point? nice to operate in fact free environments.

DolphinDan, I agree with you. There was a lot of un-called traveling in this game on both teams. And I really do believe that Coach K is a far superior coach to Roy Williams. In my opinion, Williams has to overwhelm you with talent. Coach K can gameplan, coach and make in-game adjustments to bring his team to victories. I admire the guy, and if I had a college-aged kid, I'd love to have him play for him.

he too as many steps as Barnes did right before his driving turnaround layup and as many steps right before he had that charge...referees mised alot...how about all the over the back on Zeller and Henson....face Duke won a game that should not have been close...the travel on the 3 aside it should have never got to within 3...UNC choked at the end simple as that

Great win by the Duke kids. They came back in the second half and fought hard. Great coaching by Coach K, as well. He worked the sidelines perfectly. But I can't understand how Duke was in the bonus, shooting 1-and-1 at the 15:00 mark of the second half. Karl Hess is the all-time Duke leader in assists, but John Cahill and Bryan Kersey really worked their usual magic tonight, most notably Cahill. North Carolina was about to run away with the game, and Cahill and Kersey took over, dictating the tempo of the game, slowing it down for Duke, and putting them in the bonus very, very early (and then keeping them on the line). Don't let the final foul totals fool you; they know when and how to make "stat calls". I'm still baffled that Cahill is assigned to so many Duke games, especially conference rivalry and tournament contests.....especially after his clock "mistake" in that Duke-Clemson game a few years ago.

Duke did it to me, Maryland, a while ago coming back from 10 down with like :56 to go.
Just about everthing has to go wrong for one team and evrything right for the other. It happened again tonight.

It was Curry who took 4 steps, but yes your point is accurate.
