The Poll Attacks: Voter drops KU, just because

Associated Press poll: Fletcher Mackel had Kansas ranked fourth last week.

That was a little high at the time, in my opinion.

But whatever.

I could live with it because after Kentucky and Syracuse the next few spots were up for debate, and KU at No. 4 wasn't unreasonable. So I left Fletcher alone and focused my attention on the 15 AP voters who inexplicably left Indiana off their ballots. But now I have to highlight Fletcher because he's confusing the hell out of me. Again, he had Kansas fourth last week. The Jayhawks then won at Texas A&M and beat Missouri to claim at least a share of the Big 12 title, and now Fletcher has Bill Self's team ranked ... seventh?

Yes, seventh.

So this might be the first time in the history of AP voting that a man has dropped a team three spots after a 2-0 week that featured a win over a Top 10 opponent. Fletcher had Kansas ahead of everybody except Kentucky, Syracuse and Missouri last week. Now he's got Kansas behind Kentucky, Syracuse, Duke, Michigan State, North Carolina and Marquette -- meaning Duke, Michigan State, North Carolina and Marquette all jumped the Jayhawks after the Jayhawks' perfect and impressive week. Following tha logic, my guess is that KU will beat Oklahoma State and Texas this week, win the outright Big 12 title and then fall behind Georgetown, Wisconsin and UNLV on Fletcher's ballot next Monday, at which point Fletcher will also drop Thomas Robinson to Third Team All-American because all this playing well and winning isn't really that impressive.

Coaches poll: Mississippi State has lost five straight games and four of them have come to unranked opponents. So of course the Bulldogs are still getting five points in the coaches poll. That makes sense, right?

Listen, I know coaches are busy this time of the year.

I'm busy this time of the year.

But it's not difficult to click on and realize the Bulldogs are now a 10-loss team with seven losses to unranked schools, and it doesn't take much time to click on and see that Rick Stansbury's team has dropped five straight, including a 67-50 decision on Saturday to a nine-loss Alabama team. I'm talking seconds, not minutes. And yet there are still some men somewhere putting Mississippi State on a Top 25 ballot.

Even Mississippi State fans think that's dumb.

Renardo Sidney has punched teammates for things less stupid.

With the Michigan State loss to Indiana, the door opens wider for the possibilty of Kansas getting a #1 seed in the Midwest. It will be interesting to see how it all works out. Many worthy teams, great clashes to happen soon.

Koolkmac: not all teams develop see Mississippi State.

Understandably, polls mean nothing but the writer's point in someone dropping three spots after winning two is something to think about whether or not Fletcher was home alond drinking scotch and waters contemplating the world as it is while he was voting.

And it gets a bit tiring in here when someone whines about the officiating i.e. KU vs. MO when that same person could look back at the other game KU vs. MO and the same could be said. Leave the officiating out of it and take the high road like the majority of the coaches do. Fans are getting ridiculous and would question whether they are actual fans of the game or just waiting to be cry babies.

One way or another, it ain't the end of the world.

adamalger...Gutsy post for a newbie, but really consistant with the wannabes. Reputation of ZERO is quite impressive too, based on knowledge and misery Conf & Nat Titles, ZERO!... Facts are these:

Eight straight! HC Bill Self always has his teams peaking at the correct time, as does Izzo, Coach Consonants, Williams, etc. Only one team in the tourney will win, but not all end in anger, disbelief, crying, whining, pi$$ing & moaning. But that is pretty common in women's sports. Depends on your glass-half empty or full, or if you wear birtches or "pants". Some of us it's always half full or moreso. Others like misery, OSU, like to blame karma, the refs, the weather-whatever. I know it'll be difficult for some, and we know you haven't, but at please least try to ACT like you've been here before.

If your teams are playing worse late in season as misery is, then it's OK to agree with some pencil neck you never heard of if it suits you & sounds like what you would say if you were bright enough. When the wind blows fairweather... & please keep up the assinine postings so the SEC will get a quick view of "what the hell were we thinking?" Every time I think one of you guys can't whine any louder, another new one comes out of the shed. You should act like a Mule damnit, not a jacka$$. Govenment mandated birth control may be the right direction for some of you guys after all. Let's see if we can get a vote or a "Hell Yes" on that one!

I agree that the rankings and the polls are a bit mixed up this year aside from Syracuse and Kentucky being No. 1 and 2, but what I don't agree with is UNC being ranked 6th behind Michigan State. UNC has a better record than MSU and always a convincing win against them. Also, UNC has 4 losses, two of them by 1 point from top 5 opponents (a last second 3 pointer by Austin Rivers and a missed jumpshot in the final seconds of the Kentucky game in which they failed to foul Anthony Davis with a little under 3 seconds left). The only real convincing game was the blowout by FSU and the loss to UNLV by 10, but I honestly don't think the UNLV loss was that bad. UNLV is a good team with even better talent and the loss took place during the Las Vegas International Championship which was basically a home game for UNLV. I think the polls are somewhat accurate as of now, but I really feel like MSU should be 6th and UNC 5th.

I consider games away from home as road games, why else is there be the term "true-road games" other than to differentiate between the two. Kentucky has played 2 games on the road against ranked teams and and lost one of them. The next best road wins...unranked Vandy or LSU. Those untested freshman are gonna choke again. Calipari can recruit (time will tell if he does legally), but the guy can't coach. I could win 30 wins a year with the talent he has. Duke has to depend on our slow unathletic players that live and die by the three to win our championships.

No team is the same team it was in November... All of them have matured in one way or another, if for no other reason than because they've played over 20 games... SMH

no matter, teams should be reward for the whole season instead of last few games.  unc and duke should get #1 seeds over any big-12/big-10 teams.
having said that, only idiot would bet against ACC team winning National championship this year..... there's a reason why ACC has 5 of 10 NCs first decade of this century.  Since non-ACC team won last year....  numbers don't lie.
