And they lost that one game he completely missed. Fortunately he was around to win game 4 in OT. I'm not denying Shaq was the much more important player on the Lakers, but you can't deny Kobe was pretty important too.

Kobe might as well missed the game he played a whole 9mins when Shaq completely dominated and they won. The game Shaq fouled out Shaq already registered 36pts and 21boards. They both played the exact same minutes that game

It doesn't matter if he was imporatant or not. All that matters is how he performed, on the court. That's where I went with my original post on the subject. Kobe's play in those 4 finals with Shaq were worse than better than what he did throughout the playoffs.

He says his job is to shoot and in the 7 finals he's been in, he's a career 40% shooter. Shaq held more than his own in those 4 finals

They may have played the same minutes in Game 4, but Shaq fouled out and it was Kobe who had to finish that game off. How you can deny the importance of that is beyond me.

Jim, my whole reason for posting those stats was to completely dispell the notion that Kobe was Shaq's robin. Nobody talks about any caveats when talking about Kobe's time with Shaq, it's always "Kobe was Robin" and it's left at that. The stats I posted CLEARLY shows that it was 1A and 1B. Also, there is no way to shrug off what Kobe did to the Western conference(regarded by everyone as the best conference). Now that I've brought out the stats, you can't just change the argument to "well Shaq was the mvp and case closed", oh no Kobe was "robin" throughout their whole time together. My basic premise(with no sarcasm this time), is how can anyone look at those stats and say "Robin", instead of 1A and 1B? Also 25, 5, and 5 in the Finals during the 3 peat isn't the greatest, but it's nothing to sneeze at. Also we're not taking into account that Shaq had GREAT advantages over the likes of Smiths, etc. in the Finals, so it's not like Kobe was going to get off into God like Jordan Finals averages. In the end, during their run it was 1A and 1B.

Guys (Kold & Rule), you're attempting to reason with one of the more vocal and notable Kobe haters on these boards - J_D will NEVER give Kobe his due - he joins a long list of Kobe haters who are alternately confounded and infuriated by his brilliance and longevity, and instead choose to celebrate players with half the shelf life, or who have yet to prove themselves truly worthy of the comparison.

Even though Shaq was "matched up" against weaker Eastern Conference centers, everyone who watched the Nba in those years knows that Shaq was the most double and triple teamed player in the NBA during that time and it only increased in the Playoffs.  I wouldn't say that Shaq and Kobe were 1A and 1B.  Kobe was great, but Shaq was utterly dominant.

The great thing  about watching the Laker teams in the post season games in the early 2000s is that when the best player in league would go to the bench, the Lakers still had the best player in the league on the floor.

Duncan was better than both
When Shaq and Kobe played together in early 2000's (Let's start in 1999 and give Duncan a headstart)

Head to Head playoff matchup wins:  Lakers 3 - Spurs 2

Finals Wins:  Lakers 3 - Spurs  2

Finals Appearances:  Lakers 4 - Spurs 2

Duncan never had a teammate on the level of a Kobe or Shaq.   Those laker teams should have been 5-0 against the spurs.. not 3-2.

Look at Duncan's 2003 season, the best season anyone has had since Jordan. He single handedly carried his team to the championship with a suppar team. The only seasons that come close to that is Lebron last year and Dirk the year before, in that order.

Couldn't agree more with this statement.

Parker is a nice player but he's nowhere close to being as good as Kobe or Shaq.

In other news Steve Nash is back tonight so the Lakers fans lame excuses come to an end tonight.

Can't wait to see how improved the Lakers defense get now that the best defensive PG in the league is back.

GSW may not score 85 tonight because of Steve Nash lockdown defense.

Looks like the same old Lakers even with Nash.

Kobe is a ball hog

Gasol looks awful

Lakers defense sucks

Kobe has taken 17 shots already....Only making 5 of them.

What's the excuse now boys? He has all his help now and he is still chucking.

+ you wouldn't even know Howard was on the court.

THEN , D'Antoni is yelling for the last shot and Kobe totally disregards it and misses a layup, but it bailed out by 1/10 second from giving up 2 points.

Hey, CL, would that go under the not respecting your coach category?

Do you see it now? The problem wasn't Brown, it is the mindset of Kobe and until it changes this team will continue to be one big, dysfunctional mess.

Stats don't lie
Rings don't lie, pizza man.  Go ahead and take your stat shots at Kobe all you want, dude is balling right now and showing no signs of letting up.

Nash was great tonight

Kobe led his team to a much needed win on the road, against a Warrior squad the Heat couldn't seem to handle

Gasol was actually pretty good out there, especially in relief of a foul plagued Howard

Lakers defense still needs work, but will come along as the offense becomes more fluid and the run-outs are reduced

Yeah, Kobe chucked his way to 34/10/5 in 44 minutes

What's your excuse now, punchline?

That's because, for the most part, and on balance, he wasn't on the court, turnip...that tends to happen when you're having a bad night trying to stay out of foul trouble!
Do you see it now? The problem wasn't Brown, it is the mindset of Kobe and until it changes this team will continue to be one big, dysfunctional mess.
This game is the FIRST TIME the full Lakers squad has played a single game under Mike D'Antoni.  The rest of their season begins NOW.
