Living rewardable lives

"We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord."
2 Corinthians 5:8

About midway through his second letter to the church at Corinth, Paul shares something that’s going to take place in eternity.

He begins by stating that it’s preferable “to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.” He’s pointing to that time when a Christian’s spirit leaves their physical body and is instantly brought into God’s presence in Heaven. But watch what he describes next:

"Therefore…we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad."
2 Corinthians 5:9-10

We’re told that after believers in Christ pass from this life to the next, they’re going to experience a judgment. This isn’t a judgment to determine if they go to Heaven or not, that issue was settled and secured by Jesus on the cross.

It’s a separate judgment to determine the rewards we will receive in eternity. The Bible doesn’t go into much detail about the exact nature of these rewards. But it definitely depicts the scenario where some Christians receive and enjoy more eternal reward than others (1 Corinthians 3:12-15).

So what does all this mean? It means we should be living our lives in a way that’s rewardable by God in eternity. It means doing the right things for the right reasons. It means our connection with Christ is so strong and genuine that we allow His Spirit to work through us to accomplish His will.

Each time we do something righteous out of a pure love for Jesus, it’s an act that will be rewarded in eternity. And as the Scriptures show, there will be those who receive much reward and those who receive little. Let’s not come up short when that moment in eternity arrives; let’s endeavor to live rewardable lives.

March 31, 2012 2:46 pm

In 1 Timothy 1:12 Paul writes,

"And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry."

According to Paul, Jesus did three things.  First, He enabled him, which means Jesus is the One who puts the gifting in you.  He is the One who gives you talent.  He is the One who gives you the ability.

Second, Paul says that Jesus counted him faithful.  Apparently, Jesus is watching and He expects you and me to be faithful.

Third, Paul says that Jesus put him into the ministry.  In other words, Jesus opens doors when we are faithful, doors that no man can shut.  When the way seems blocked, Jesus can make a way where there is no way.

Here is the point.  It is not enough just to be enabled.  Some of the greatest, most gifted, and talented people in the world are living far, far below their potential.  While the enablement is there, Jesus has not found them faithful yet, and so certain doors of opportunity remain shut.

Having the gifting is not enough.  You need to have both the gifting and be faithful.  When both are there, Jesus opens doors.

Recognize and develop the gifting God has given you, but focus on being faithful so that God can open doors in your life.

Please keep my friend Tony M. and his mother and family in prayer.  His mother had a severe stroke a week ago and has been hosppitalized.  She is not longer responding to treatment or to people, but I told Tony that she knows he is there.  He has been spending almost all of his time in the hospital at her side.  Please pray that if his mother will not be healed by God, the He would take her home peacefully and soon so she does not suffer while being unable to eat, speak, or react.  I pray the peace of Christ upon this family and lift them daily to the care of our Lord.

Be God's!

May God's many blessings be abundant with everyone here!

Sissy,

Your friend Tony M., his mother and thier family are all lifted up.  We know God is in control, no matter what happens.  One of the many wonderful things about this thread is when prayer requests are put on it, there are many praying about it... that reminds me of one of the most comforting passages in the Bible to me, when Jesus promises to be where two or more are gathered in His Name.  What an awesome promise!  Dear Lord, we are all in agreement in prayer for Sissy's friends, that you let your will be done and give them Your perfect peace throughout the entirety of the hard time they're going through.  We ask this in Jesus Name, Amen.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

coach Bobby Petrino up. He had a motorcycle wreck last night and is in the hospital.Praying for you all. Have a blessed day!

Will do- those bike accidents are scary, man.  I have come up on a couple, and it always scares me- how little protection you have when it's car-on-bike.  The few times I have been tempted to straddle a hog, my wife vetoes it.  LOL- I don't have to worry about making a decision anymore.

Father, we lift up coach Petrino and his family.  We know that it is the fear of what might happen that troubles us.  Send Your Spirit to make yourself real to them in this hour.  I lift up Sis and her Mom.  I lift up all the various requests that have been mentioned.  I also ask that You minister to the unspoken requests.  Father, we know that You know our every need and care- even the number of hairs on our head (for some this is a bigger deal than for others).  We ask in Jesus' Name, Amen.

"Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor Me."
Psalm 50:15

Prayer opens our eyes to see God's hands at work in the midst of trouble.

Lord, When life's troubles leave me feeling broken, please help me turn to You in prayer.  You are my deliverer & I want to honor You. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Gary, I will definitely keep Coach Patrino in my prayers.

I saw my GI tract doctor today after having the endoscopy a few weeks ago.  The new medicine seems to be preventing more bleeding ulcers, but we are having a hard time getting the insurance company to agree to pay for it.  The doctor and his staff have been wonderful in pursuing this for me.  I'm hoping Mom is discharged from treatment this week, and no more venous ulcers develop on her legs.  She then has to make up her mind if she will have further cancer surgery and if she will have the bypass surgery on her legs and femoral artery.  One day at a time, sweet Jesus!

Be God's!

Coach Petrino is lifted up.  Everytime I see or hear of a motorcycle wreck I wonder why I ride.  I guess I have a short memory.  May God please keep me safe.

Sis, you and your mom are lifted up.

Heavenly Father, I lift up Sis and her mom and give praise for the healing You have performed and ask that You would continue to bless them with eventual complete healing.  I ask that You would touch the hearts of the insurance folks that all costs would be covered and I ask for Your peace, comfort and blessing on this entire situation.  I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Last Sunday marks two months since Anita's husband Greg died.  She is having ups and downs as to be expected.  Please keep her and her family in prayers.

Tony's Mom is getting worse.  Her lungs are filling with liquid and the doctors can't seem to drain it off.  Doesn't sound like it will be long, but she is a remarkably strong woman of faith to have lasted this long, and Tony (even though he is dragging) is still faithfully at the hospital caring for his Mom.  Please keep them in prayer.

We serve a God who keeps His eye on the poor, the widow, the orphan, the suffering, the helpless, the sorrowful--and He will restore strengtrh and joy to all in His time.  Praise His name!

Be God's!

"Plead my cause, O Lord, with them that strive with me; fight against them that fight against me."
Psalm 35:1

We need friends and supporters. Jesus sent the disciples out two by two because He knew how important it was to have someone to share with and to support. Standing alone, we feel like our strength is limited, but with someone else by our side, new reserves of strength surface.

It is good to remember that our Lord strives along beside us, never leaving us, pleading our cause at every step. He understands us, loves us, and never turns away from us. Because of the mighty love of God, we can be assured that we are never alone.

Lord, be with me and all those in need this day. Support us in the things we desire to do, and help us to always follow the right path. In Jesus' name, Amen.

April 4, 2012 11:49 pm
Haven't been here in a while.  My Mom, Rebecca is in the hospital in Maryland.  She fell down and was not discovered for two days!  She lives alone primarily because she is a hoarder-  which is a disease.  Her whole house is FULL of junk and nobody can walk in there.  Even the EMT guys couldn't get a stretcher in.  So her kidneys failed.  And she can't talk now-  but that could change after a few days.  She could get back to normal.  And maybe she can or we can finally deal with the hoarding problem.  My sister and niece actually had her dog put to sleep today since it was in such a pathetic state.  (I live 3000 miles away.)

If other people were living in her big house-  she wouldn't have been alone on the floor for two days but her hoarding disease prevents that.  Before her haording got so bad-  she actually rented rooms to foreign Doctors and nurses who visit NIH.  So they would have discovered her before two days.

But every time we tried to clean up the house and take things to the dump-  she fights like mad to save all her treasure-  just like on the tv shows.  So she really almost died from the disease.  And my niece said a similar event already occured in the past.

Oddly enough, she is actually a health care professional (whch apparently is quite common.)  But mostly every room and bathroom is put beyond use-  the doors don't even open.

Even though she is in the mental healthcare field-  she is in complete denial that she has any problem.  Just needs "to clean up."

Yeah, but she keeps buying stuff-  no garage sale or yard sale is safe! Hopefully, this time it will change.  Assuming she recovers.

All prayers appreciated.

IIpapaII, I will keep your Mom and your family in my prayers.  Not everyone can stay home and live with aging parents and it is sad she was alone, but understandable with the hoarding problem.  She wouldn't be the first person in the mental health care field who had an addiction/compulsion problem; in fact, it isn't unusual.  Denial is a powerful thing.  Prayers for you as well; you are facing quite a challenge in helping her through this.  The Lord will see to her heart and mind and to her healing; listen carefully to what He says to you about resolving this challenge.  We are never without hope.

For everyone who has prayed for my friend Tony M.'s mother, she went home to be with the Lord at 6:30 a.m. today (Wednesday).  Tony is seeing to the arrangements.  Please continue to hold him and his family up in prayer for strength, comfort, and healing the hurt of the loss.

My love to all my brothers and sisters here,

Hey Guys,

I have never posted here but stop by occasionally to check up and really appreciate the spirit of the thread.  My purpose in finally posting is to post a praise.  My wife went to the dermatologist to get a spot checked out and it did come back cancereous.  However it rated a zero which is extremely early and can be surgically removed with 100% recovery rate without radiation or chemo.

We turned 40 this year and it is starting to register that we are not invulnerable anymore but praise our heavenly father our lesson was taught very lightly.  I encourage everyone to go get themselves checked and have physicals if you haven't had one in a while so that you can lead a healthy life.

I am so thankful to God for my family and our health he has blessed us more than we deserve!

Hey Pops,

Great to see you back, brother!  I'm very sorry to hear about what is going on with your mother.  I'm praying for her full & speedy recovery that our God alone can bring.  Also praying that He uses this to deal with the hoarding.  We know He can!  You, your mom, sister and niece and all family are lifted up.  The greatest thing is that He is in control!

Sis,

I'm so sorry about your friend Tony M.'s mother.  Praise the Lord that she is whole now.  Tony and his family are in my prayers during the horrible process of grieving.  Thank you for letting us know, sweet sister.

Turkey,

Welcome, brother!  It's awesome to see you here, and that's awesome news in your post!  Shows the grace and mercy our Father is full of, and the way He loves to pour it out.  I'm very happy to know that this will be a complete success.  God is good!  Thank you for posting it here, too.  God obviously had a plan besides healing your wife, to let that testimony show how important it is to look after ourselves.  That is definitely important, since our bodies are His temple!

May God bless y'all and everyone else here.

I will add my praise to Wild Turkey1's praise!  Mom was released from treatment today; the ulcers on her leg have all healed and she is free to resume activity.  I took Mommy out for her first driving lesson--we drove 7 miles to town and shopped for food (yes, the roles do reverse when you get over 60 years of age! lol).  She did fine and is praising God for being able to be active after 14 months.  I also agree with Wild Turkey1 to get check ups.  Mom still has some spots of skin cancer that she will have to decide whether to go through more surgery on, as well as needing to talk to the vascular surgeon about the bypass surgery on her legs.  I wanted her to get some "doctor time off."  Then we will take up the next steps.  Pray for guidance for us to arrive at God's best plan for her.  At 85, she may not want to go through more surgery.

My biopsies came back showing only infammation of the GI tract.  Had I NOT gotten the endoscopy done when the pain became intense, I would have had more bleeding ulcers develop; praise God that I can be treated with medicine and not another surgery (and a soft diet again).  In two months, the doctor will decide if he wants a CT scan of my abdomen since liver and pancreatic cancer were found in my grandmother, father, his brothers, and his sisters.  Once again, keeping our bodies (God's 'temple' as Hogfan rightly calls it) as healthy as we can is a blessing from God.

May your all be blessed abundantly this marvelous Easter season!  Much love to you all and a warm greeting to Wild Turkey1, it's great to see you here!

Be God's!

Everyone have a wonderful Good Friday tomorrow (won't be on-line tomorrow) and a meaningful Easter.  Having a wife and two young daughters in my house Easter can lose its true meaning pretty quickly once they start to get dressed (Devil works his hardest on Sunday's)!  I have said for years that we should all take the money we would spend on new Easter clothes and give it to the poor and wear sack cloth on Easter but I just can't get anyone to buy in on that one.

Anyway I will remember this group and the requests on this thread and keep them in my prayers.
